This is a wonderful, but completely different, approach to leadership, of self, family, and institution. Friedman’s ‘take’ on leadership doesn’t focus on technique like so much of the current material out there, but instead on what he understands as the fundamental factors of differentiation of self, non-anxious presence, playfulness, and the ability to risk.

Perhaps, what is so radical about his approach is his insistance on self-differentiation as THE most relevant key to leadership. The capacity to become oneself with a minimum of reactivity to others, the ability to chart one’s own way by means of one’s own internal guidance system, the capacity to take a stand, and taking maxumum responsibility for one’s own emotional being and desiny rather than blaming others are the goals he’s shooting for.

In an age of reactivity, immaturity, adaption to weakness, and gridlock, with the attending attitudes of safety at all costs, quick-fix mentality, chronic anxiety, and the corresponding fallacies of expertise, empathy, and the self Friedman’s emphasis is fresh, incisive, imaginative and provacative. I also believe it’s highly relevant and eminently useful! Of course it’s also challenging and difficult, but liberalizing in the best sense of the word.
